Problem

Black Girl Magic (BGM) is a community engagement initiative that works with Black girls in a local Providence middle school and seeks to inspire and uplift Black girlhood. The initiative highlights and celebrates the beauty and power of Black girls. Utilizing a holistic approach to addressing all aspects of Black girls’ lives and the daily experiences they navigate, the program encourages them to discover and develop their strengths rooted in exploration of their authentic selves.

BGM seeks to create a combination of long-lasting peer-to-peer and mentoring relationships, foster a pro-Black-girl environment, and build evidenced-based programming that equips girls to navigate race, gender, economic and social barriers. Lastly, BGM seeks to remain youth-centered by giving students the power and autonomy to assist in the ongoing creation and development of the group, increase outreach to local high schools and middle schools and enhance the long-term sustainability of the program. To address this, Black Girl Magic needs to:

  • Develop a sustainable peer mentorship program with high school and middle school students
  • Develop a marketing / outreach plan and website to promote involvement, information and resources to the great community
  • Develop workshops, curriculum, planning and logistics for future peer mentor meetings and BGM sessions based on research-based evidence
  • Develop and increase cross-collaborations with local community-based organizations and student organizations at local high schools

Mission Statement

Our mission is to aid Black Girl Magic in expanding their company's reach through cross-collaborations with mentorship programs and local community-based organization. One of our goals is to develop collaborations with local middle and high schools in Rhode Island. We want to inspire young black women to join their community and share their stories.
